The Human Resource Management Association of Trinidad and Tobago (HRMATT) successfully hosted its much-anticipated C-Suite Conversations on Artificial Intelligence vs. Human Intelligence (AI vs. HI) today at the Hyatt Regency. The event brought together HR professionals, industry leaders, and technology enthusiasts to explore the future of work at the intersection of AI and HI.

HRMATT President, Mrs. Cavelle Joseph-St Omer, delivered an impactful opening address, stressing the importance of adapting to the fast-evolving human resource management landscape. She emphasized that understanding how AI can complement human intelligence is vital for building a more efficient, empathetic, and innovative workforce in Trinidad and Tobago.

“AI is a strategic technology that can support our country’s transition to a digital society, benefiting both workers and companies by enhancing health and safety, supporting competitiveness, and improving processes,” Joseph-St Omer stated.

As businesses worldwide embrace AI-driven innovations, a central theme of the discussion was whether AI would replace humans in the workplace. HRMATT firmly believes that while AI can process vast amounts of data quickly, it cannot replicate the depth of human cognition, empathy, and emotional intelligence. A key question posed during the event was, “How can AI augment human intelligence and efforts in the workplace?”—a question explored in depth by the event’s speakers and panelists.

Joseph-St Omer further explained, “AI excels in computational power, speed, and accuracy, while HI thrives on emotions, intuition, and complex social interactions. AI relies on predefined algorithms, but HI is shaped by innate abilities and continuous learning from experiences.”

The event featured esteemed speakers, including Senator the Honourable Randall Mitchell, Minister of Tourism, Culture, and the Arts, who delivered a thought-provoking address on AI’s transformative potential in the tourism sector. Keynote speaker Ms. Rita Kusi, an HR Consultant, KUSCI Consulting in Ghana, captivated attendees with insights into how AI can elevate HR practices, particularly in emerging markets.

The distinguished panel of industry leaders included:

– Irwin Williams, Head of Software Development, iGovTT

– Dr. Inshan Meahjohn, CEO, National ICT Company of Trinidad and Tobago (iGovTT)

– Dr. Hyacinth Guy, Principal Director, Hyacinth Guy Human Resource Company

– Zia Paton, Digital Service Leader, PwC Caribbean

– Dr. Navi Muradali, CEO, Patient Connect, and HRMATT’s Wellness Hub partner

– Shawn Clarke, General Manager, Amplia Communications Ltd.

– Ian John, CEO, CyberEYE Ltd. and futurist

– Leslie Lee Fook, Director, AI, Analytics & Automation, Incus Services Limited

The panel discussion, expertly moderated by Paige De Leon, a public official and media practitioner, delved into how AI can harmonize with human intelligence to drive productivity and innovation. The conversation also underscored the crucial role that empathy, creativity, and emotional intelligence play in decision-making—qualities that AI has yet to master.

Key Takeaways for HR Professionals:

– Staying Updated on AI Trends: As AI continues to evolve, HR professionals must stay informed about technologies reshaping the workplace.

– Integrating AI into HR: AI can optimize HR functions, improving decision-making, recruitment, employee engagement, and performance management.

– Enhancing Efficiency: AI’s automation of routine tasks enables HR professionals to focus on strategic initiatives that add greater value to their organizations.

– Personalizing Employee Experiences: AI’s potential to personalize development opportunities and provide tailored feedback can significantly boost job satisfaction and retention.

Joseph-St Omer emphasized, “AI, as a general-purpose technology, has broad implications across many sectors. However, when discussing AI’s impact, it’s important to specify the particular application—whether it’s computer vision, speech recognition, deep learning, or robotics—and consider its unique implications for workers and companies.”

The event provided invaluable networking opportunities, enabling HR professionals to exchange ideas, share experiences, and collaborate on innovative solutions. Attendees left equipped with cutting-edge insights into AI technologies and their potential to revolutionize the HR field.
